Renault Duster 1.5 litre 85 diesel       Renault Duster will also come with 1.5 DCi diesel engine that has been taken from Nissan Micra. The built and quality of this SUV could give a tough competition to other SUVs like Skoda Yeti and BMW X1.  Price tag of Renault Duster is likely to land between the range of Rs. 8-9 lakh.
Renault Duster 1.5 litre 110 diesel                Renault Duster will also be launched with the same 1.5 litre of diesel motor, which will churn out 110 BHP of power. Expert says that Renault Duster will be capable to deliver 17-19 kmpl mileage on Indian roads. While two wheel drive Duster will be low on mileage, four wheel drive option will put its best foot forward. A petrol model will also follow the diesel in India. Among the three transmission modes, Duster SUV will be the most fuel efficient in the 4x2 mode.

Power of Renault Duster

Renault Duster PhotosThe Diesel powered Renault Duster is expected to be powered by 1500cc Turbocharged Diesel I4 SOHC engine that is able to deliver 85 bhp and 110 bhp power. The 1.5 litre diesel machine has been taken from Nissan Micra. The engine delivering 110 bhp will be the Step 4 version of K9K engine. Both these versions are said to provide for high torque figures i.e. 250 Nm and 275 Nm and would be highly spirited to drive. The petrol driven Renault will house a 1598cc I4 DOHC engine that produces 105bhp at 5750rpm and a maximum torque of 148Nm at 3750 rpm.

Acceleration & Pick-Up

Renault Duster Gear Renault Duster diesel is expected to accelerate to 100 kmph in 11.8 seconds with 164 kmph top speed. Renault Duster is fit for city as well as the off roading and has the nature of a true 4x4 SUV. Renault Duster will be available in both 4x2 and 4x4 models.

Renault Duster Exteriors

Renault Duster India will look like a perfect off-roader in appearance. Duster is based on Logan platform and will come under D segment of cars. Renault Duster is designed to grapple all types of roads and tracks. Wide wings and a tall stature reveal its personality.  The roof rails, chrome wide grille, the skid plate, antenna, high ground clearance and the alloy wheels render it a much sporty look. The rugged exteriors of Duster are marked by three slat grille which ingrains a big Renault badge in the centre. Although the engine of this off-roader is not-so-powerful to actually do a serious off-roading, still it has been given claddings all around to protect the vehicle’s body from any and every angle. According to the pictures of Renault Duster in global markets, it is observed that the horizontal grille is held by a pair of double optics headlamps. Renault Duster is quite lengthy according to the trend of crossover SUVs and do not qualify the sub-4 meter excise levy. A sleek body color bumper in the front gives way to black plastic cladding which houses round fog lamps on either side. A nudge bar holds the number plate in its centre. The bonnet is all flat with no curves however some characters lines are visible. Tinted large windshield gives way to the high roof. The roof antenna is an example of aerodynamic design and helps reduce wind noise and turbulence.

The side profile is the most interesting one with lot of contours. The beltline is very sharply cut. Body color door handles, wing mirrors, fuel lid can be seen. The two windows are followed by a quarter glass though no third row is present inside. The most noticeable part is the wheel arches which are very prominently seamed. Under the large wheel arches are the large 16 inch alloy wheels.

The rear side is marked by a curvy boot lid, skid plate, vertically placed tail lamps with D-Shaped curve alongside, high mount stop lamp, hexagonal windshield (having six sides) with a rear viper, Renault badge and reflectors. The boot lip opener has a Duster written plate over it. Just below it is the number plate. The rear bumper is also not very wide but is painted in body color.

Exterior Measurements

Renault Duster length exceeds 4 metre and thus could distance itself from the sub 4 metre contenders who do not have to pay heavy excise duty. The overall length of this SUV is 4.315 meters, just shorter than its big brother Renault Koleos, and a width of 1.822 meters. Considering its size and high ground clearance of 210 mm and 205 mm for 4x4 and 4x2 versions, it looks an utter off-roader. The height of this SUV is 1695 mm. The total kerb weight of Duster is 1235 kg and the wheelbase is 2673 mm.

Renault Duster Interior

The interiors of Renault Duster are much inspired by Renault Logan. Though it is an SUV, it can seat only 5 passengers. All black-theme in the interiors take away the luxury quotient but renders a sporty look. The 3 spoke steering, which bears Renault’s logo, is electrically powered but can be a bit too heavy on turns. The dash is quite curvy and looks sporty. The AC vents on shiny brown central console and either sides of dashboard can be closed completely. The rear seat passengers can have individual AC vents outlined with shiny brown color for their comfort. The instrument console has large dials akin to SUV and is illuminated in red. A lot of interior equipments looks like borrowed from Logan. The same semi hooded instrument cluster cover with its chrome polished dials with a digital display in the center all comes from Logan. The gear lever is a bit stubborn like the steering. The glove box is quite big for storage.

Renault Duster’s flat seats will surely be comfortable in Indian car with the usage of high quality materials having a premium touch to it. Even the material used on the door sills is up-market. The music system is integrated well in the central console and looks modish with its Bluetooth and aux input functions. Front seats are two electrically programmable but without memory functions. Power window switches for the rear passengers are most likely to be on comfortable door pads. The shiny brown door handles will be large to hold while turns and jerk.

Interior Comfort

Duster has a large, comfortable interior. Interior comfort is provided by cushioned seats in the SUV. One will surely get good head room, leg room and shoulder room as added benefits. Renault Duster will have ample space at the rear for luggage so that the car will be perfect for long drives and touring. Manual Air conditioning with climate control is an expected feature. Practical and functional, its passenger compartment can hold 5 passengers and provides up to 475 litre of space in the boot (d -pending on version), easily providing enough space to carry all their luggage and leisure equipment. With the back seat folded down, the space available goes up to 1,636 litre. Folding the front passenger seat down enables objects as long as 2.65 meters to be carried in the passenger compartment. Because drivers and their families have different expectations, Duster offers equipment which concentrates on the essential without being superfluous.

Renault Duster Engine and Performance

Renault Duster is likely to come with 1.5 CRDi diesel engine that has been taken from Nissan Micra and will be mated to a six speed manual gearbox. This engine will be tweaked in two different ways so as to produce two different power outputs: 85 bhp and 110 bhp. The one delivering 85 bhp will churn out 250 Nm of torque and the one with higher power sheds out 275 Nm of torque. The SUV is available in two wheel and four wheel drive versions. In some global models the transmission control can be set to Auto, Lock and 4x2 modes. The Auto mode is active when Duster starts and the car automatically decides what amount of power is required by the wheels based on the available grip. When the Renault Duster is set to ‘Lock’ mode, the car enters the 4x4 mode and around half of the torque is supplied to the rear wheels. In the 4x2 mode, the Duster acts as a 4x2 car and is the most fuel efficient in this mode. Moreover, the refinement would be on another level and going by how damped the engine is in both the Logan and Micra, one can expect the same levels of NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness) factoring in the Renault Duster in India. Renault Duster will also be powered by a 1.6 litre of petrol engine. The petrol driven Renault will house a 1598cc I4 DOHC engine that produces 105bhp at 5750 rpm and a maximum torque of 145 Nm at 3750 rpm.

Wheels

Renault Duster Wheels Renault Duster will be equipped with large size wheels that will give it a perfect SUV look. Thus 16 inch alloy/steel wheels are most expected. According to experts, tyre size of Duster is 215/65. The alloy wheels nut-cover will come with anti-theft key. A spare wheel will either go below the chassis or will hand on the boot lid.

Braking & Handling

Renault Duster DashBoard Disc brakes will be used in Renault Duster. Disc brakes are very effective in application of emergency brakes. Renault Duster is fit for city as well as the off roading and has the nature of a true 4x4 SUV. Renault Duster will be available in both 4x2 and 4x4 models. SUV is built on an extended Logan platform. It applies a monocoque chassis and one which gets Macpherson type suspension in the front with double wishbones and there is a deflected H torsion beam at the rear. This setup is alike most hatchbacks and the advantage of the same is its simple construction and significant cost savings. But then weights have been bestowed on to deal with the more hefty SUV body.

Handling & Safety

Renault Duster Safety Among the safety features Renault Duster is expected to feature Anti-lock Brake System, Emergency Brake Assist besides Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and a stability control module. It will also come with two front airbags (front driver and passenger) and three-point seatbelt pretensioners depending on the version.Head and thorax side airbags can also come as standard in some variants. Its sturdy and reassuring appearance are a reflection of its equipment. An SUV is ought to have top-notch security and in its first SUV in India, Renault will take care of safety features in the car.

Why the Mahindra XUV500 is excellent value for money

Mahindra has pulled off a coup of sorts with the kind of features and pricing it is offering for its new SUV, the XUV500. The features in the top-end XUV500 are found in SUVs that cost nearly twice as much in India. Here is why the XUV500 is unmatched among SUVs on the value-for-money proposition.
The base W6 model is priced at Rs. 10.8 lakh ex-showroom Delhi, and even at that price the vehicle is loaded with features. And then there are the other two variants – the XUV500 W8 priced at Rs. 11.95 lakh and the XUV500 W8 AWD (all-wheel drive) priced at Rs. 12.88 lakh, which take the features list even further.

Photo:
So what are the features that the XUV500 offers at these price points that competing MUVs, SUVs and crossovers such as the Toyota Innova, Tata Aria, Ford Endeavour and even the Toyota Fortuner can’t match up to?

Safety features

If you look at the safety feature list on the XUV500 W8 variants, it beats the Toyota Innova, Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner hands down, with its configuration of six airbags, electronic stability program (ESP), hill-hold control and hill-descent control. The Tata Aria 4×4 Pride offers some of these features at Rs. 15.84 lakh, at least Rs. 3 lakh more than the most expensive XUV500.
The base XUV500 W6 offers two airbags and ABS with all-round disc brakes. It’s most immediate rival, the Toyota Innova offers a disc-drum brake configuration on all models, while ABS and airbags are available on the Innova VX variant only which is priced at Rs. 12.51 lakh, about Rs. 1.7 lakhs more than the XUV500 W6.

The Tata Aria offers similar features only on its Pleasure variant that’s priced at Rs. 12.61 lakh. Going further up the value chain, the Ford Endeavour 4×2 offers similar safety features at a price point of Rs. 17.04 lakh, while the Toyota Fortuner offers this at Rs. 20.14 lakh. The Tata Aria is the only other vehicle among these four that offers all-round disc brakes.

Driving aids and convenience features

The XUV500 offers a long list of convenience and comfort features. The base variant has quite a bit to offer as well, such as an integrated CD system with USB and Bluetooth connectivity and steering audio controls, cruise control and voice command for stereo. The Tata Aria Pride is the only other vehicle to offer cruise control, while the Innova, Endeavour and Fortuner don’t. Parking sensors aren’t present on the Endeavour, while the Fortuner, Innova VX and Aria (all variants) offer them.
LED parking lamps and static bending lights (that are activated to see around corners) are not offered on any of the other vehicles, while projector headlamps are offered on the Aria and Fortuner as well.

Gizmos and gadgets

When it comes to other gadgetry, the XUV500 again beats all its competitors comfortably. Features such as tyretronics (which monitors tyre pressure in all wheels) are not present in any of the other vehicles (other than its stablemate Scorpio).
Chiller box is another unique feature to keep your drinks cold (the Aria has a chilled glove box). GPS navigation and touchscreen infotainment system are present on the W8 variants, while the W6 has a touchscreen audio system.
Rain-sensing wipers, light-sensing automatic headlamps, follow-me home headlamps are some of the other features unique to the XUV500 at this price point, while only the Tata Aria Prestige and Pride variants offer these features. The Fortuner lacks these features, while the Ford Endeavour 4×4 variant priced at Rs. 19.7 lakh (about Rs. 7 lakh more) offers a navigation and DVD system.
And then there are other features offered at a lower price point compared to the competition such as leather seats and alloy wheels.

Performance

On the power and performance specs as well it holds its own against the other four vehicles. The XUV500 has a 2.2 litre diesel engine that puts out 140 bhp of power and 330 Nm of torque. The Tata Aria has similar specifications.
The Toyota Innova is sadly underpowered at just 102 bhp from its 2.4 litre engine compared to the XUV500, while the Endeavour and Fortuner, of course, deliver better power from bigger engines. The Endeavour’s 3-litre engine puts out 156 bhp, and the Toyota Fortuner puts out 169 bhp.
However, among all these vehicles, only the XUV500 has a six-speed manual transmission which helps in better mileage of 15.1 kmpl because of a taller overdrive gear. The rest are all five-speed manuals. The only other SUV in the vicinity with a six-speed box and better mileage figures (17.36 kmpl) is the Skoda Yeti priced at Rs. 15.5 lakh.

In summary

All in all, this makes the XUV500 a great value for money crossover vehicle, with its aggressive looks, long feature list and good power specifications. We expect Mahindra dealers to remain rather busy in the next few months.

Pronounced as Mahindra XUV 500 with the last to ‘00’ pronounced as alphabet ‘OO’, it symbolizes activeness and the agility besides the quickness it has as an SUV. Mahindra has arrived at the design of this SUV after an intensive research and survey that is said to have been conducted in various western markets besides India. In addition, the global design brings with it the global standards as well in this SUV. Thus Mahindra XUV is much safer and crash resistant than any of the other Mahindra SUV offering. Land Rover LR2 Freelander and Volvo cars employ transversely placed engine in their cars. Such first in the class features make this SUV at par with global standards. Mahindra XUV 500 Exteriors

Exterior Appearance

Mahindra XUV 500The new Mahindra SUV takes on the garb of a Cheetah. With jaw-shaped front grille, paw shaped door handles, bodylines of a pouncing Cheetah and bold lines, all make it a look alike of a Cheetah in motion.

The new SUV by Mahindra is based on monocoque construction which is a single frame unlike the traditional design versions of Mahindra SUVs in India. This ensures better handling and also makes the car safe and secure. The front face of the mighty looking SUV has a characteristic jaw-shaped honeycomb grille similar to a Cheetah’s face cuts. The honeycomb grille also finds its presence on the broad front bumper. The headlamps are two barrel shaped with side indicators in the same headlamp assembly. There are also daytime running lights placed horizontally just below the two barrels of the headlamp in the same assembly. There are two fog lamps on the front, one each on either side. Overall, the front has a shape of a pouncing Cheetah.

Moving on to the sides is much more rewarding than the front. The bold line that starts from just above the front side fender continues to the rear lamps. There is also much prominent and bold splash-guard on the front and the rear wheel that makes it look macho than other SUVs in India. The doors also have ‘paw’ shaped handles which are first in class and gives Mahindra XUV 500 a thematic look. The side outside rear view mirror also houses the side indicator and small parking light. The sides appear more like a fully built SUV with a high stance. Mahindra has however dealt beautifully with the side appearance and it does not look boxy from the sides. The roof rails have also be streamlined with the roofline.Mahindra XUV 500

The rear appearance of XUV 500 is in consonance with the overall Cheetah image and has been carved out well. In all, it has 50-50 ratio of the boot and the rear windscreen. The tail lamps have a unique three vertical compartments separated by molded reflectors. The tail lamp sweeps forward to the side and merges with the bold line that has come from front fender. The rear also has a rear wiper and high mounted stop lamp. There are also two stop warning indicators on both the sides. The spare wheel has been very intelligently hidden just below the boot. The Intellipark sensors are bumper colored and distinctly visible. The characteristic feature of Mahindra XUV 500’s rear is the presence of twin exhausts.
